Finishing, Refinishing and Repair
Finishes:
We offer low VOC and water-based lacquers, hand-rubbed natural oils, and other low-VOC finishes.
Surface Finishes
(ie. lacquers, varnishes and polyurethanes) If applied properly, they are durable, quick to dry and have a consistent sheen. On the other hand, if there is a scratch, which there will be, the film needs to be sanded off and reapplied.
Penetrating finishes
(ie. tung oil, linseed oil, blends) Diluted with a natural-based solvent, these are non-toxic and can be reapplied with less preparation. In our opinion, if appropriate, it’s the best way to appreciate the wood. It will need to be reapplied every few years.
Finish Samples
If you are requesting to match an existing finish, please provide the most concrete example of a finish/color that you can: a photo, a piece of wood, etc. All samples we make are billable.
A note about wood:
Wood is a natural material and inherently inconsistent and unique. Every piece of lumber is different. In our opinion, knots and variation in color and grain are part of the natural beauty of wood. If you your expectation is different, please make that known before the start of work.
Care and Durability
All liquid or food spills on the wood must be removed immediately with a dry cloth or the finish may fail. Clean with a damp cloth. Maintain with a wood wax, like Daddy Van’s.
Billing / Deposit / Payment
With finishing, refinishing and repair work, we never know exactly what we are going to get into. So, we bill by time and materials. We offer an educated estimate, but we charge by actual time ($60/hr) and materials (cost + 20%).
We require a deposit of 50% of estimate to start work and the balance to deliver or pick-up by customer or delivery service.
